ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

Making a difference one step at a time

HYLF hosts various events and programs throughout the bar year.  The events are opportunities for lawyers to network and to help raise money for HYLF’s Grant Program. The programs consist of HYLF’s Adopt-an-Angel program and the Read to Succeed program. Not only are these programs great for networking within the legal industry, they are also great ways to give back and get involved.

Adopt An Angel

Since 1992, HYLF’s Adopt-an-Angel program has made the holidays more memorable for  Houston’s underprivileged children. The successful program promotes the core mission of HYLF by giving members of the local legal community an opportunity to support these children through holiday giving and voluntarism. Year after year, the incredible generosity shown by the program’s donors brings light and joy to its recipients during the holiday season.

Each fall, the Adopt-an-Angel program connects donors from the Houston-area legal community with economically disadvantaged children. Each donor shops for gifts for the child, and the committee and volunteers—attorneys, law firm staff, law students, and others within the legal community coordinate delivery of the gifts to the children. Even Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the elves make an appearance!

Read to Succeed

Read to Succeed places young lawyers in the third-grade classrooms at David G. Burnet Elementary and Tijerina Elementary to read with the students via Microsoft Teams or in-person on Fridays throughout the year. The program is fortunate to both retain veteran volunteers and grow with new ones yearly. Read to Succeed grew from studies finding correlation between reading proficiency in third grade and high school graduation—rates that are even more compelling in underprivileged areas.

The program has proven to be mutually beneficial for the students and volunteers. For the students, it emphasizes the importance of reading while nurturing an appreciation for good books. For the readers, it exposes them to the positive contributions volunteering has on mental health in a high-stress industry. HYLF is always accepting new readers. If you would like to volunteer, please email info@hylf.org.
